Life Size
Life Size is a film about a girl who doll comes to life and helps her reconnect with her father. Tyra Banks plays the doll who acts similar what "Barbie" girl would act like. Killing Us Softly and Bell Hooks discussed this concept of "whiteness" of black women and how they are used to reflect black. For one this film showed a black barbie doll which is different in society, but the real part is how close to white the black doll (Tyra) looked. Beauty in regards to black women has strayed more and more towards the beauty of white women. To be beauty for black women is to look more like white women with straight flowing hair and lighter skin. Anyone different looking from this is considered to have exotic beauty, which just mean something different than the norm, but doesn't necessarily mean that it is a compliment. Society is filled with beauty being skinny and basically looking white, gradually I see this changing in newer media but may never change with what beauty look is normal.
