The discussion about fandom made me think of what type of fan I am. I want to say that I am a fan but I am not fan-atic. I have my DVR set to record my favorite television shows because I want to make sure I will not miss them. I have watched back-to-back episodes of certain shows until I was caught up with the newest episode. For example, when I started to watch True Blood, the show was already in its third season. I remember watching at least three episodes every night until I caught up with, at the time, the current season. Does this make me a fan or a fan-atic? I want to say that this makes me a fan because I like to watch the show and just wanted to know what had happened so I could understand the new season better. I believe I am not a fan-atic because I have no intention or desire to dress as a vampire, for example. Fan-atic sounds quite extreme and excessive. Perhaps someone who wants to look like a film or a television character, or like a popular figure would be consider a fan-atic.
So, if it is okay for me to watch three episodes of a show in one night and that makes me only a fan; then what makes someone become a fan-atic? Maybe fan-atics try to look like a character or a popular figure they admire because they want to become part of their world. Maybe fan-atics want to experience the lives of these characters and celebrities; and the only way to do that is dressing and acting like them.
