King of Queens

One of my favorite sitcoms is King of Queens.  I always thought Doug was so funny, but this documentary really opened my eyes to how he is really portrayed.  In the Butsch article, he explains that the characters and their lives are based on the ideological hegemony of our society.  The main characters are constantly in need of supervision by a "Professional".  We follow the lives of these characters, however we rarely see their lives prosper.  In the King of Queens in particular, there are often references to Doug's education.  Doug is a package delivery man, and is unmotivated and content with his life, however his wife is always pushing him to do more with his life.  This is a consistent theme in the show, however this problem always resorts back to the fact that Doug has no education.  This also follows with our societal ideologies, the idea that anyone can succeed if they try hard enough, and if they fail it is personal.  In this case, since doug isn't educated, he can never progress in his career, which is his fault.  This sends a message to audiences, and further ingrains these ideologies into the minds of those watching.
