Self Image

After reading through the blog today I noticed that some people blogged about Barbie as well as the Killing Me Softly Video.  In the video we saw tons of images of the ideal woman, however we all know that nobody looks like that.  Photoshopping is so accessible today, some people photoshop Facebook photos.  Our desire to look perfect is out of control, however it is not just advertisements that influence us.  From a very early age young girls play with Barbie's, they live out their dreams through their Barbie dolls, and most little girls probably expect to be just like Barbie when they are older, however this is unrealistic.  The idea of how a woman should be has been pushed on us from a very young age, a beautiful, thin woman who can do anything.  This creates a false ideal in our culture, which is then perpetuated though our media, and spread to the masses.  This is problematic for society, because people will go to any extent to be perfect, and since that is truly unattainable, people come down on themselves because they are unable to achieve perfection.  However in reality it impossible to be perfect and it is important to recognize this rather than insinuating perfection can be achieved.

  1. I really like the point that you made about self image being an issue that starts of at an early age. With shows like toddlers and tiaras, the problem is only getting worse. Not only is the media, and toys (like Barbie) sending the wrong message, but now parents are validating this behavior.
