Savage U
What do you think would happen if MTV created a program featuring college students all across the country where the sole purpose was to discuss their sexual habits and encounters, good or bad? To start things off, I don't know the answer, although I do know this show exists. It's called Savage U hosted by sex researcher and UIC grad Dan Savage. His mission [in the show] is to give sex/relationship advice to college students as they tell their stories on national television. Sex is still a taboo topic in American culture, so I'm particularly interested in understanding how people will take this show. The audience does not know the socio-economic status of any of the students, however, does the topic discussed in itself place them in a lower class right off the bat? I guess college students already stand in a working, almost neutral class being that they're still in school and the generality is that they're poor and forced to work. Interestingly however, given the network and topic discussed on the program, I think they're going to be put on a level under that of a typical college student. Vocalizing sexual experiences is an incredibly risk-ay subject. I don't have any answer or a prediction yet as the show is merely on its second episode, but I'm really curious to see how people take this one. Will it boost or lower the interviewees status in society, let alone in their university? Only time will tell..
