bell hooks

After watching the Bell Hooks video, I found a lot of her ideas to be incredibly interesting.  Hooks found that in order to discuss gender, race and class, one must understand and discuss popular culture because that is where all the issues came from.  We live in a world where sex, and money attract people.  That is why I believe that Bell Hooks had an accurate view on rap music and how it is portraying the rappers.  Everyone knows that sex sells and that is why the music industry strives on making their artists be sexual and explicit even if it is degrading towards women or sends a negative message to young kids.  Bell Hooks then later goes on to say that sexism is what makes hip hop popular.  If it wasn’t for the sexual content that is displayed in almost all rap songs, it probably would not be as popular as it is today.  I find it sad that people don’t care about the message they are sending to viewers, they only care about what will sell and make them money.

  1. I agree, the music industry has taken advantage of the fact that sex sells and many women are put under pressure to fulfill these sexual desires and maintain a certain look and personality based on the way the media portrays them. Rap music plays a huge role in this and the artists in the industry are responsible for shaping a large audience of people which should be taken into concern when creating songs and music videos especially when kids are learning from them.
