After watching Bell Hooks concept of Madonna I was interesting
to see how she follows her career and really looks at the way that Madonna uses
popular culture to monopolize on this nation. Looking at how Madonna first
approaches the public as this independent women in charge of her sexuality, to
a girl willing to submissively reproduce any image that pays the most.
In a
Vanity Fair issue she portrays the idealistic Western cultural fasciations of cute-ness
and sexy that is tossed at women in both popular media and by superiors. It was
these concepts that Bell hooks touches on that truly embodied how women are
demoralized as individuals. These sexual and explicit ideas that are reproduced
for young women become part of a training for them that they eventually feel is
normal and suitable. It clearly ties into what Katz’s discusses and how women
are treated based on these ideas because they are demoralized, told to be submissive and obedient, and used.
These ideas that are seen across many main stream levels are just some of the
ways that lead to violence among women and the hyper masculinity fostering in
men.
It lastly leads me to believe that these images are all "poses" or facades we use to help shape who we think we are suppose to be or act like. In turn, we feel we are being individualist with our own ideas and concepts but in fact we are given a projection or model of what we are suppose to act like and we preform the part, for better or for worse.
