critical thinking in Americas Next Top Model
A show that I enjoy
watching a lot is Americas Next Top Model. The cycle that is currently on the
air is about a group of Americans and British girls competing with each other
to become the next top model. Although there are girls in the show that
consider themselves plus sized models, many of these girls fit the stereotype
of being tall, skinny, and beautiful. Their self image is very important to
them. I remember a few years back hearing Tyra Banks say after Danielle, a
black female, won the competition that she “didn’t want another black bitch” to
win. She tries to change the way the girls act on the show, teaching them to be
critical thinkers like bell hooks talked about in her video. Since many
cultures are not taught to think critically and are only taught what they
necessarily need to know, it is important for people who may be less fortunate
to learn how to think critically and ultimately make changes in their life for
the better. Tyra teaches the girls that regardless of their size, color, or
ethnicity, they have to take responsibility for themselves and think about more
than just themselves and money.
