Barbie

After much class discussion, I came to the realization that Barbie is a poor role model for children and it is interesting to realize how stereotypical the doll is. Barbies are one of the most commonly purchased toys for children, especially for girls. I find the materialistic, perfect figure, with long blonde hair to be an influence for children and it seems unfair that Barbie is what our society views as a beautiful girl and teaches our younger generations to perceive that as what you should be like and look like. Although someone mentioned there are other race barbies and a barbie with no hair being made, it seems like Mattel only released them do to the pressure and comments from our society about the original product. I think Mattel holds a huge responsibility in raising our youth with their products and it is important for them to broaden their styles of barbies and keep in mind they are an influence for children.

  1. I agree with your opinion on the discussion about barbie. Originally, I thought it was interesting of Mattel to come out with different types of Barbies in order to have a wide demographic of consumers but after thinking of your stance on it, it is kind of sad that they are probably only doing it to get more money and not for the meaning behind it.

  2. I agree as well. Barbie dolls are made to look the way flawless women should. There was a controversy surrounding Barbie's breasts. I believe that the new barbies have a smaller bust and look less "perfect". These dolls influence the way that girls will learn to believe what women should grow up to look like.
