Rags to Riches

The American ideology of "rags to riches" was strongly portrayed in the movie the "Pursuit of Happyness." Although this idea keeps people motivated and hopeful, it is also very misleading. Only a select few can become millionaires, professional athletes, or successful musicians.

There have been dozens and dozens of films that portray the same plot line: an average or lower class individual rises to the top with his or her undying perseverance. In reality, this is very unlikely. It is not possible to be successful solely relying on your motivation. In the real world, it depends on who you know and who knows you. More importantly, money is power.

After discussing this topic and watching the movie clip, I started to wonder why this theme is so popular. These inspirational stories, whether based on a true story or not, give hope to people who want more. Everyone likes a happy ending. Although most of us realize that our chances of becoming millionaires are very slim, we still hope. Instilling this idea in our minds leads to great disappointments. It is great to have ambitions and dreams, but you have to be realistic. Life is not a movie.
