Now, I ain't sayin' she a gold digga...

Women have come a long way. They are no longer property, can wear pants without criticism, vote, be educated, and have jobs. Their place is no longer in the home, and even though there still is a glass ceiling, they are closer than ever to being equal to men. But what's with this stereotype of women being after a man's money?

I believe it comes from the previous ideology that men were the breadwinners in our patriarchal society. Good Charlotte takes a stab at criticizing the current status quo by making a mockery of it in their 2002 song "Girls and Boys". The lyrics read "She'll get what she wants if she's willing to please/ His type of girl always comes with a fee/ Hey now, there's nothing for free." However, as a woman myself, I can tell you that as nice as it is for men to pay for things, I am not willing to "please" just for a free night out, nor are most women I meet.

I have been to the bar more than once where I will be approached by a man, have a conversation with him, and then hear the words, "Just so you know, I'm not going to buy you a drink." I appreciate that men challenge this double standard, however for any man to assume I am only interested in a free drink is an insult. And to this I say "I can assure you, I am independent and can buy my own drinks, thank you," before I walk away.
