media makes us the same??
The concept of cultural hegemony has been one of the focuses in class and the readings this week. The music videos that we watched in class this week gave me a better understanding of this concept because we were able to watch and analyze things that are currently influencing our culture. The "Rack on Racks," video was interesting to me because I was already familiar with the song. I have listened and sang along to the song on several occasions but I had not payed much attention to the message it was sending. I do believe that it re-enforces ideas of social normality. Especially specific to our generation, material things are idolized and people judge self worth by the amount of money that one has. This particular song re-enforces these ideas because the lyrics constantly refer to money and the perks that come with it. There is often reference to high priced material things and sexual favors as a result to having money. With songs like these always planting the same ideas in to the listens' mind, many keep or start to form the same ideas. This correlates with the concept of cultural hegemony.
