NEW GIRL...maybe not so new?

This week in class we talked about ideology and how it is reflected in the  media.  Ideology helps us understand the world around us through the use of patterns that become normal to us.  Sometimes they become so normal that it becomes hard for us to notice them.  I found this true after watching an episode of “New Girl”.  I’ll admit I really like the show I find the main character, Jess played by Zooey Deschanel, adorable, or as the writers of the show say, adorkable.  So I found it difficult to look at this show in a critical way but after doing so I found that “New Girl” is perhaps not so new.  The show revolves around ‘Jess’ a young quirky girl who lives in a loft with three guys.  They are all single and in their early to late twenties, mostly white except for the one black guy.  This urban tribe does not do much except hang out in their loft and talk about the people they date or their lack of dating people.  Jess or one of the guys will get into an awkward or funny situation that usually works out in the end. When the show is laid out like this it sounds a lot like hmm every other show like How I Met Your Mother, Friends, or Seinfeld.  Maybe because all this shows have a similar lay out that is why they are familiar and why we like them.  These shows have become the norm and follow a predictable pattern that may reflect our societies ideologies.
