Diamonds from Sierra Leone

After watching Kanye West's music video for "Diamonds from Sierra Leone", I found it to include an interesting message and meaning. I believe the song was an attempt to show how our society is dependent on non basic needs and unimportant items such as jewelry, clothes, money, cars, and more specifically diamonds. The video depicts how we value wearing diamonds as part of our image but nobody really knows or thinks about what it takes to get these diamonds we are so fond of and our society ignores the fact that children are dying in order to satisfy our needs. I believe Kanye is trying to get America to realize we are wrong for doing so but we are all guilty of acquiring diamonds and wearing them. My favorite line of the song is "How can something so wrong make me feel so right?" because it portrays how we strive to be rich and have the luxury of diamonds and disregard the fact that we shouldn't be wearing them. Kanye is expressing how he went from nothing to having luxury, money, and happiness. Kanye raps about the rich and famous lifestyle he lives but you can't really understand if he's feeling guilty about it or doesn't care. I thought the video had a good idea behind it but wasn't that impressed with the lyrics to the song because it could have been more meaningful and sent a stronger message to the audience by preaching how unfair our society is being towards Sierra Leone and other places that distribute these so called "blood diamonds".
