Dee and Dennis Become Celebrities.

In this episode of “It is Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, Dee and Dennis decide that they want to become celebrities. They believe that the best chance to become a celebrity is to do what celebrities do. So they start to go out every night to different night clubs. They are somewhat successful in their quest of becoming celebrities. They make some new friends and they are able to get into the most popular clubs. In order to keep up with these new friends, they start to take ecstasy and Dee has to dress provocatively.

I believe that “It is Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is a critique of the ideology that surrounds the mainstream American society. This specific episode is criticizing society’s emphasis on materialism and physical appearance. Celebrities are generally associated with money and fame. They generally get anything they want. Dee and Dennis glorify the materialist celebrity world. In the beginning of the episode they are reading “In Touch” magazine and defending the magazines’ approach to “news”. At one point Frank tells them that they should read the newspaper. They make fun of the newspaper with their “real news”. They say nobody wants to read that. Their disregard for newspapers but support to gossip magazines shows that they are willing to accept the mainstream society’s values.

The show ends with the “gang” watching a video of Dee and Dennis on public accesses television. One night, after taking ecstasy at the club, their dream of becoming celebrities comes true. They finally got to be on television. Sadly, in order to reach their goal they make a mockery of themselves by wearing oversized baby diapers while dancing in front of the camera.
