Pursuit of Happiness

This week in class we talked about the Marxist concept and how it is used in the media.  We watched a clip of the Pursuit of Happiness and I found it to be really interesting because of how much it tied in with the concept of Marxism.  It was obvious that Will Smith grew up in a home where his parents told him what he would be capable of in life and what was going to be realistic for him to achieve.  He then later told his son he should not focus on basketball so much because he basically was not going to be a professional in it.  Will Smith sort of realized after seeing his reaction that just because society, and people who you have surrounded yourself with say these are your limitations to something, does not mean you should abide by them.  He had a sense of false consciousness because he then got to thinking that if you work hard enough and put in the effort, anyone can become rich and part of the upper class. I think that helped him realize that even though others had ideas of what they thought he could make of himself, he changed that, and wanted to prove that he was capable of doing whatever he wanted and let his son know that he could do the same.
