_____ in the Middle?
How the Working and Middle class is represented in the media is no coincidence. Throughout an array of television shows, society is exposed to stereotypes on how people in these two classes live, act, and more. One of my all time favorite shows that just so happens to demonstrate these very idea is Malcolm in the Middle. Malcolm in the Middle is a show about a working class family and the struggles they encounter on a daily basis. Malcolm’s family is often seen as tasteless, disrespectful, and most importantly poor. In the show we see the portrayals of an idiotic father who is pretty much talentless. We also see the mother take the place of the male role in the household; she’s the tougher parent, while the father is more passive. We also have the defiant, trouble maker, older brother. Lastly, we have Malcolm, the genius who is the pride and joy of the family. "The one that's going to make it" despite the obstacles he faces. A very interesting aspect of this television show is that the characters happen to be Caucasian, and not the usual African Americans or Hispanics. I chose to talk about this show because of how it shows members of the dominant race in a lower class. I find it interesting how Malcolm is made out to be the future success story. To me it’s almost as if the show is making a statement about things not only being hard for the less dominant culture, but for the dominant culture in America as well.
