Disney and participatory culture
This week in class we talked about the importance between the relationship between media convergence and participatory culture. When these two meet the results can end in conflict, critique, challenge, collaboration, or recruitment. One example of this is Disney. Disney successfully uses media convergence with almost everything it does from films to television shows. Old movies are now resurfacing from the "Disney vault" and they are shown in television shows, Disney On Ice, Broadway and countless other forms. Although, Disney creates a franchise and has dedicated fans, few venture to challenge or critique Disney creations for fear of a copyright suit. The few who challenge or critique take care to mention that they are not copying. For example, on The Simpsons, when they did a spin-off of Snow White the song sung by the seven dwarfs said "Oh-Hi, Oh-Hi.....If Disney sues we'll claim fair use, Oh-hi, oh-hi". This shows that the result of media convergence(Disney) and participatory culture result in a conflict when the two meet. Disney is a particular case where the participatory culture is usually not welcomed by the franchise. It seems to be the usually case, however, because unless the franchise can make a profit from the participatory culture it is usually not welcomed.
